Original Bonsai Pavilion

A view of the Pavilion from the entry For many decades, the Bonsai Pavilion has been an attraction for visitors at the Wild Animal Park. Amidst the exotic sounds and smells of the animals, the Pavilion remains cool and shady in the heat of Escondido.

A joint effort between the members of San Diego Bonsai Club and San Pu Kai, the Pavilion showcases excellent examples of bonsai, including a juniper donated by John Naka, and a juniper and saikei donated by Harry Hirao.

Every month, volunteers from both clubs gather to work on the trees and clean the Pavilion grounds. Here, a volunteer tends to a pine. These pictures were taken in November, and while the trees were somewhat dormant, they still receive individual care. The layout of the Japanese inspired garden was originally done by (??) in (??).  Club volunteers built the lath enclosure and the display areas. Alan looks pleased with the little Japanese Black Pine
A volunteer tending to a foemina juniper. The more experienced volunteers work on the trees, while the less experienced or the less bold tackle such work as pulling weeds and oiling the pots. Everyone is very friendly and willing to share their knowledge. Why should I turn around? I'm busy!
